Regarding to previous article “Is Iran safe for tourists now?” The difference in culture is one of the main responsibilities of authorities which are active in the field of tourism. Even in the one country, we can see different culture and customs that people have their own lifestyle.

The culture usually comes from religion, history, continent and many other criteria’s, so it’s logical that all around the world have wide range of customs and culture. For example in Iran we have the custom of compliment. This custom is one of the main behaviors that Iranian parents teach to their children’s as a one of the respect signs to other people. But foreigners find it so confusing. You must know that Iranian people just compliment for show their politeness.


Don’t be angry with staring eyes

The culture of staring to each other especially to the people of other nationality and different appearance is the other culture of Iranian people even they smile to the pedestrians that other people of different culture smile and is common among other cultures. But the curiosity of Iranian people is one of the manifest characteristics of Iranian people specially when they face to the tourists with different appearance and clothes are interesting for them.

Wearing tie

Iranian people most of the time they don’t wear a tie for daily style, But in some special occasion such as weeding or parties and other celebrations they wear a tie. Before the Iran revolution, wearing tie was one of the prevalent parts of men styles in formal ceremonies and meetings. Even at the office they used to wear a tie as a uniform of staffs. But after revolution people gradually lessen the use of tie in their style.


Beauty surgeries

Iranian people weren’t the inventor of beauty surgeries but they are very interested in spending money for these kinds of surgeries. One of the most common surgeries among Iranian people is nose job. In the street you will see people with nose glue that recently they had nose job and maybe you as a tourist might see them over the street. Most of the time women do nose job in Iran. but other facial and body surgeries are common here and in Iran you will see lots of doctors who are working in this field even from other parts of world people come to Iran for doing some beauty surgeries.

Cultural traditions of Iran

Each country has their own customs and traditions; there is no exception for Iran. We have some habits that pass through generations. In this part of article we want to talk about some other traditions of Iran that might be interesting for you even they could seem somehow strange and shocking for tourists.


Iranian never sits back to others

We shouldn’t ever sit back to others if we were inevitable, at first we must apologize and then sit. This is one another custom of us that is so shocking for other people. Even at driving the driver apologize for sitting back to the passengers and most of the time in reply Iranian people say “no problem” or “be relax” that is another example of being compliment among Iranian people.


“Don’t mention it”!

Accepting money for doing some works in common custom in all around the world. But in Iran isn’t polite to accept money soon right after doing that job. At first they must avoid getting money and in the end they finish it with this sentence “don’t mention it”!
This custom is always confusing for tourists especially whenever they do purchase in Iran.
One of the tourists said about their experience: in Iran whenever someone offers you something at first you must avoid getting that until they offer you three times. And after that finally get that thing and say thank you.

Regaling

Regaling is another custom of Iranian people that could wonder foreigners. We have custom of regaling in Iran. For example whenever someone achieves a success or gives a birth or get married and when they buy a new house, his o her relatives and friends want from them to regale most of the time they buy confections or invite others for lunch or dinner.


Finger snapping

Finger snapping is another custom of Iranian culture we usually do it at our ceremonies, weeding and any other joyful parties. Finger snapping have different kinds that everyone learn it from childhood.


Peganum harmala (Esfand) smoke

We always heard that Esfand can ward off us from evil eye Iranian mothers usually smoke Esfand for their child. Esfand is one of the local Asian planets and grow in Middle East especially in India and Pakistan. It’s interesting to know that Turkish people use it too but not in the way that Iranian people do. They put Esfand in one capsule and keep it in the house or car. Also Moroccan uses it to ward off themselves from goblins.
In Iran they use dries capsules mixed with other ingredient are placed it in red hot charcoal, where they explode with little popping noise when they burst a fragrant smoke is released.


Iranian people say Nope (Noch)

Iranian people never hesitate themselves to say No. most of the time instead of saying no or Nope, they shrung eyebrow and sometimes they use both at the same time. They say No and shrung eyebrow. These are the things that really make travelers confused.


Iranian culture food

Like every other countries around the world, Iran have lots of different kinds of foods and drinks. And it’s the most interesting parts of Iranian culture. In Iran foods and tablecloths (Sofreh) is respectful because it is a place which we serve food there and everyone in family sit around it for eating every meal.

We believe that food is a God gift’s. For sure you have heard the name of Iranian foods or even you might have seen it photos over the internet and would like to test them. In Iran we have many delicious foods and drinks and in our most of foods we usually use meat and rice. Some of our famous foods are Chelo Kabab, Chicken Kabab, Ash Reshteh, Dizi and one of our famous cold drinks is Dough. We most of the time have it in our food table. We make this delicious drink with combination of yogurt and water. In other cities of Iran we have some other foods that are unique for that city and we will explain in another article later.
In Iran food table (Sofreh) is respectful because family gathers around it 3 times during the day and at that time of eating food usually family interact with each other which this interaction in our culture is really valuable. But eating food individually is kind of disrespectful to family and sometimes its sign of disorganized family relationships.


In Iran there are some forbidden foods that according Islamic rules should be Halal. And also wine and alcohol is forbidden drink. Buying and selling these drinks is crim. We never eat pork meats and some other fish’s meat, crabs and squid and eating insects and some seafoods isn’t common in Iranian food culture.


Tea is another Iranian hot drink which is the most popular one in Iranian culture. We usually use black tea and sometimes we add some natural flavors such as Cinnamon, Cardamom and Citrus Aurantium. Iranian people drink tea with sugar cube or some traditional sweets. Tea is the main parts of Iranian food culture. In some northern cities of Iran they drink coffee as hot drink. Also in Iran we drink syrup which we make them with combination of herbal essences, water and sugar and we drink it as a cold drink. In total we can say that some traditional drinks and herbal teas are the most important parts of our foods culture.

Usually, Iranian people eat their food with spoon and fork and serve meal in dish but are some other food such as Abgoosht or Ash Reshteh we serve them in bigger bowl. There are some foods that we twisted in the bread and we call it morsel (loghmeh).

Iranian family culture

Family is main parts of every society, Iranian family contains of parents and children which they live together. The families have high priority in Iran and it is a respectful unit in Iranian society structure. In the past grandparents lived with them too but gradually they separate themselves from their child and grandchild. Iranian families always live together until the time that their child got married. In some other cities of Iran we can see that even after children got married they live with parents but in some other cities they live separately.
Iranian family always supports each other for example whenever their relatives have any problem they help each other and never let them to be alone. Even they participate in holding a ceremony such as weeding or other celebrations. Iranian people are really kind and helpful. They always do their best in every aspect of life.


Parents in Iran have responsibility of treating children and supporting them in education process and also helping them to be independent. In the future help them to get married and find partner for life.
Marriage is an acceptable way of sexual relations but it is a permanent commitment. Parents most of the time are responsible for formal proposal for marriage of their child in Iran we call it Khastegari. During Khastegari two families of bride and groom discuss about marital contracts. The average age of marriage for women is 19 to 22 and 24 to 26 for men but the divorce rate now a day’s increased gradually. In Iran divorce isn’t approved in Iranian culture.


In the end, Iran and Iranian people want to live peacefully and whenever you hear the name of Iran it resemble of beauty, lots of astonishing historical architectures, beautiful monuments, delicious foods, kindness of people and rich culture in every city of Iran.
